My grandfather was name Moir and came from Portobello. At some time before he married he changed his name to Thornton and this is what began my research into our family. We have never found out the reason, however his mother Mary Grasswick (Maiden Name) was the daughter of Alexander Grasswick and Mary Alcorn of Portobello. She died before 1871, so therefore she was my great, great grandmother. My grandfather left Scotland and married my grandmother in Wales, but I have visited Portobello and the house in Pipe Street where they grew up is still standing. We live now in Stourbridge in England but we visit Edinborough whenever we can, and I am always interested in any details of our past.
I hope that there is a connection somewhere,
Best Wishes
Mick Thornton
