Your grandfather, George, and my father-in-law, Herbert Melville Alcorn, were brothers. They had two other brothers, Earl and Richard, and a sister, Marion. Their father, Earl LeGrand Alcorn, was married to Aimee Geslain Chaffee. It's important to be accurate with the spelling of names, or it gets more difficult to trace ancestry. Their family came from Jeffersonville, Indiana and Louisville, Kentucky, two towns on the Ohio River. Their father, Fielding Vroman Alcorn, rode in the Ohio cavalry for the Union in the Civil War. We don't have much more information, but we've been told that there is American Indian blood somewhere in the family history. African American Alcorns are fairly common. Alcorn College (formerly Alcorn A&M) and Alcorn County, Mississippi are, to our knowledge, named for a former governor of the state, James L. Alcorn, no known relation, but who knows? The reference to Fielding Vroman Alcorn is below. We believe it to be our ancestor because it is such an unusual name and the era is correct. Grandpa Mel said Fielding was a prisoner of war in Libby Prison! He remembered sitting on his knee and touching Fielding's old Union cap. We were never able to get any other records from the Department of Defense when we sent in a request, so if you want to give it a try, we wish you luck. Your cousins in New Jersey did a bit of geneological searching according to your grandmother Jane, whom we visited with in Florida about 15 years ago. Maybe you can get some information from them. Good luck!
