I came across your page while researching something else. The spelling you use is not the original spelling for this name. This name is of Arabic origin. It was introduced into the southern part of the Iberian penninsula and Sicily, Italy by the Arabs when they concquered that part of the world. the al means "the" the cantara means "briddge". My ancestors, berbers, were also concquered by the arabs and Igather that we acquire the name somehow. I am Morrocan. The name is used in Italy, where they think it's an Italian name, and is the name of a leather-like fabrick; Philipines, and other places where it is the name of numerous cities. e.g. the only communist city in Portugal, a city in Spain, a district in Sicily.Like most spaniard names of southern Spain that begin with "al" it is not spaniard. I hope that was helpful.
