Albury Family Genealogy Forum
No doubt you are all aware of how common the name Albury is in the Bahamas as well as how great a proportion of American Alburies are to be found in Florida.
I see that Zara Albury Hunter traces origins to Bermuda, while other Bahamian Alburies claim descent from American Loyalists. The name Albury was clearly extant in the Bahamas before the loyalists turned up there and I suspect that in fact all Bahamian Alburies go back to these earlier settlers.
I know the claim is made in Haziell Albury's book on his family, but in fact the Alburies of his direct line turned up in Man-o-war and the only direct evidence of American Loyalism is in the families they married.
It seems to me most probable that all Bahamian Alburies are descended from the William Allbury who went out to Bermuda in the early 17th century. I am typing this at work and don't have details to hand. However he was the younger son of Henry Albery who lived at Locks Farm, near Wokingham in Berkshire, England. Henry died when his sons were still relatively young and left instructions for the property to be sold and the proceeds divided among his heirs. As well as William taking his inheritance and heading off to Bermuda his brother John shipped out to Rhode Island and appears to be ancestor of the Albro family claiming descent from there.
