Scott: Go to the Family History Library which is part of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day-Saints (the Mormons). They will assist you in getting started and will point you in the right direction. They will not do the work for you, however their volunteers have access to many recourses and are more than willing to help someone in your prediciment. They have microfilm and microfiche on hand and can draw on the assets of the main library in Salt Lake City, Utah. Cost to have microfilm sent from SLC to your local library is about $3.25 covering the postage round trip. Census records etc can be made available for research in the library facility. None of the materials can be removed from the library. Much luck to you.
