I was shocked to hear anyone from New Jersey asking about my father. He was from Idaho Falls, Idaho and was stationed in N.J. for some time. That's when he met my mother, Rose. They were planning the wedding while his ship was being built in Kearny, and it was ready to go before the date they had planned, so they advanced the wedding date, went to New York for a four day honeymoon and then he left for the South Pacific. He left in May of 42, was in a big battle in November of 42 and his ship sailed to Hawaii for repairs. I was born at the end of January of 43 and he was killed by a Japanese bomb as he worked in the engine room during a battle on April 7, 1943. He and my mother corresponded almost daily from the time he left and I have the letters he sent to her. He knew of my birth and had a picture of me. I spoke to a few of his shipmates in the late 80's. A cousin o f mine heard about a reunion of the Aaron Ward sailors and I wrote a letter to the gentleman organizing the reunion. He read my letter to the men and many of them wrote to me and called me. One gentleman stopped to see me on his way back to New York from Florida, where the reunion was held. My father's younger brother was also killed in the war. I went to Idaho over 20 years ago and spent time with my father's mother. I saw my grandfather's grave and, on the back of the tombstone, the names and dates of death of both my father and his brother were engraved. This is a very difficult situaton for me to deal with even after all these years. I never got to meet and know my father and I think of him every day.
Do you live in Jersey City? I was born in Jersey City and lived here most of my life. I don't know if the pictures are of my Dad or not and the only medal I have of his is the Purple Heart. I have work tomorrow so must go now.
Thanks for going to the trouble of reaching out to me.
