Alaniz and it's North African heritage

Having traveled all of Spain and parts of Northern Europe, I learned that Alaniz comes from Arabic. Ala, of course is God according to Islam and the rest means "from". I have met friends in Morrocco and Tunisia who share our last name. Has anyone had a similar experience?
