I grew up in Brownsville, Texas (on the border) and my mother's family name is Alanis. We traced the family to a town (in Nuevo Leon I think) called Mier. I also know a girl who grew up in La Grulla, Texas whose name is also Alaniz (but spelled with a "z"). We both believe that we are related.
