Garrett,

Don't know if this will help any but here goes. I don't believe there is a difference between the two spellings. I'm doing some research myself. My last name is Alaniz but on my father's and grand-father's BC the name is spelled Alanis. I have come to the conclusion that the difference came about because of the pronounciation of the name. Entries were made into birth records and babtismal certificates according to what the person making the entry heard. The last name is dotted with (z) and (s) all the way back to the 1500s and it appears they are done this way within the same family. I'm not sure there is any connection but there is a town in Spain by the name of Alanis in the state of Seville. Hope this doesn't confuse you more.

Ramiro
