CHANCE FAMILY
Jesse and Polly moved to Alabama between 1819 and 1834. Nathan was born in Ga. and William J was born in Al.
According to census information Jesse was born in GA. His age has been approximated based on the age listed on two census reports.
Jesse is enumerated in the
1820 Burke County, GA census.
His family consists of his wife
three children (2 boys and 1 girl).
He is found again
in the 1830 census of Dallas County, AL.

Dallas County Land records indicate that between 1835 and mid 1837, He purchases 240 acres in four seperate land transactions. All the acreage is located in Dallas County. These records indicate that Jesse had received some degree of education as he signs his name in each case.
Jesse died in probably Sept. or Oct. of 1837, leaving a will which names only his wife.
The 1840 census for Dallas County, Al, list Mary "Polly" Chance as the "Head of household" along with 10 children ( 5 boys and 5 girls). Before 1850 six of these children will leave home and start out on Thier own.
1850 Dallas County, AL census list Mary "Chants" along with four children residing in house number 231 of the census. The childrens names are: Mary (F) 19, Daaa (F) 17, Wm J (M) 16, D.I. (F) 12
Nathan served as a Private in Company F, 4th Alabama Reserves, River Suporting Force, 9th Congressional District, Alabama, during the Civil War.
