Excerps from "History of Washington County":

...another prominent settler in early Alabama was John Baker. He is listed in the 1785 census as a widower (Jean Baker)who resided on the Tensaw River and directed his three slaves in producing forty barrels of Indian Corn during 1785. On January 15, 1787, he joined with other Anglo-American settlers of the Tensaw and Tombigbee Valleys in signing a petition asking the government to retain in command at the Mobile the popular Pedro Favrot.
