Hi Dan
My gg grandfather was John Allen Gordy/Gorday who was b. abt 1835-38 in Alabama. He first appears in the 1850 Marengo County census in the Browning household without parents. In 1861 he enlists with the 11th Alabama Co. E from St. Stephens. At this point in time he lists his home as Pleasantville (just north of St Stephens around present day Frankville). I can not connect him to the St Stephens Gordys and as you can imagine the proximity of the two is quite annoying! Family lore is that his father's name was also John which would obviously point to John Gordy from St Stephens but his will (1834?) doesn't list a wife or any offspring (unless he is illegimate/ etc. blah, blah blah). John Allen Gordy takes up residence in Choctaw county after the war and eventually ends up in Wayne, Greene counties in Miss. He is stricken from the Escatawpa/Vinegar bend voter roles in Oct 1916 so I guess he migrates back to Ala at some point. His civil war pension is also paid out to this area of Ala. His picture appears in the History of Washington County book Volume 1 on page 80 with the other Confederate veterans at their reunion in 1905/6. Elijah Bailey and Gibeon Sullivan are also shown. Have you run across any information on him? He has been our brick wall for so long! I am not familiar with Vinegar Bend and Escatawpa. Would this be a "stronghold' of other Gordys about this period of time that might help me find out more about him? I can't find him in the 1910 census. Maybe he is living with someone in this area. Any info you could share would be greatly appreciated.
