Taylor-Black DNA Match

A 65/67 DNA match has been found between a descendant of Adam Black (b. 1740) of Lexington, SC and a descendant of John Riley Taylor (b. 1827) of Alabama (possibly Tuscaloosa). Based on these results there is a 73.4% chance of the current descendants of having a common ancestor within 6-10 generations, a 94.42% at 14 generations, and a 100% at 30 generations. A name change, adoption or such must have occurred somewhere along the line.

John Riley Taylor’s father is unknown to us, but in the 1880 census he listed his father as being from SC. John Riley Taylor’s mother was Mary M. (maiden name unknown) born about 1805 in SC. Within a few short years after he was born, she married a John J. Lee (likely between 1830 and June 1831) possibly in Tuscaloosa, AL. This is the same John Lee that was married 1st to Mary Weaver the daughter of Henry Weaver. This Weaver family was also from Lexington, SC. John Lee, his new wife, and family moved to Copiah Co., MS in the late 1830’s. John Lee was also from SC and likely moved to Alabama after 1819.

Several families from the Lexington and surrounding areas migrated to Alabama and Mississippi around the same time. Among them were Taylors and Blacks and several others. In addition, there were several Taylors living near Adam Black in the 1800 and the 1810 census for SC. These families also share family connections with other surnames that have Lexington County roots, including the Kyzers, Hallmans, Oswalts and Weavers.

We would appreciate hearing from anyone that may have any information related to this family connection.

Michael Taylor
