Joseph and Mary are my gg grandparents. Hi, my name is Jackie Wiley. I grew up in Shongaloo, Louisiana - in the vicintity of where Joseph Cooper and his wife and 2 youngest daughters settled in about 1845. They were married in Tuscaloosa County in 1836; there first born was Sarah Frances Cooper, born in 1839 in Alabama. Their second born was Sophy Elizabeth Cooper (my great grandmother) in Mississippi in 1843.
I'm looking for the ancestors of Joseph Cooper. There are two families of the right age for which Joseph might belong. One is the family of James Cooper, but census records indicate the James Cooper family comes from Maryland. Joseph Cooper was born in Georgia about 1812. The other family is that of Obadiah Cooper and his wife Nancy. Obadiah Cooper was born in Georgia in 1782 and died in 1851 and is buried at a rather remarkable gravesite near Vance in extreme southeastern Tuscaloosa County. I thought at one time Joseph was the son of Obadiah but now I think it's more likely that Obadiah is his uncle or cousin. I believe they are related to the Thomas Cooper Jr. and his brother John who moved from Virginia to Hancock and Wilkes Counties, Georgia, respectively, in about 1785. I spent about 40 hours at the library in Tuscaloosa about a year ago and was helped in this research by some very nice people in the genealogy section -- which I recommend - they have a very good collection. If any of you can help me I would appreciate it.
