One of my great-gr-gr-uncles was JOEL LEWIS. He was a veteran of the war of 1812 and was the son of WILLIAM LEWIS SR. and ELIZABETH ? LEWIS of Chester Co., SC.ELIZABETH and many of her grown children emigrated to Greene Co., AL after the death of her husband.
JOEL married MARTHA LEWIS, I believe in Green e County. Her father was MOSES LEWIS. He was a prosperous merchant, but he was not kin to my family of Lewises. MOSES died before 1838. His probate/will papers in Greene Co. are dated 14 Nov. 1836, Book D, p. 262.
JOEL and MARTHA LEWIS had the following children:
1.FELIX G. LEWIS m. CECILY ROBERTS.Their daughter Susan married James Pinkney Phillips.
2.MARY ELIZABETH LEWIS m. JAMES P. RAGSDALE. They were living in Pickens Co., AL in 1836.
3.SUSAN LEWIS m. ROBERT BURNS. Robert was the administrator of his father-in-law's estate.
4.? LEWIS m. JAMES MURPHY
5.MARTHA LEWIS m. JOHN COCKRELL
I hope this has helped you and that this is your family. This is all I know about Moses Lewis, but I have gobs of stuff about Joel Lewis and his family in Chester Co., SC.
