Sandy,
Thanks for the birth/death info on John Nairne. From what I understand, Providence Cemetery is difficult to find.A friend of mine and I were going to meet in Panola to visit the cemetery but were never able to do so.He gave me these directions from Noxubee County, Mississippi.
"You would go east from Macon onHwy 14, which seems to become 32 in Alabama, to 17, turning south on 17.At that point you are in Pickens county.Pass through Dancy, trying not to blink, passing into Sumter County, turn left on 34.Panola is about two miles further, just three roads intersecting, two rights and a left, some houses and a few stores, some of which still have glass in the windows. Veeery sleepy. We should meet in Panola, near the Gin Mill Rd.turn which is a right. From there we go south a ways and find a gated road, which wasn't open when I last went. The last part of the route to the cemetery, which if the gate isn't open, involves walking half a mile down a dirt road turning left for another mile to a gate, then 200-300 yards.Even if the gate is open, it's going to be a walk for the last .5 mile, I think."
My friend said there is a local man who cares for the cemetery and can open the gate, but I don't know who this man is.E-mail me directly and I can put you in touch with my friend who may can tell you how to contact the local caretaker.
