Fellow Adkins family researchers,

EARLY MARRIAGES of MADISON CO, AL: (<1825)
10/17/1811: Adkins, Thomas (S) to Elizabeth (Ensley) Jones

EARLY WILLS of WILLIAMSON CO, TN:
1806: Daniel A Dunham & John D Garrett buyers at sale of property of John Garrett.
Jan. 1817: Adkins, Thomas S; Inventory: $4 bond on Daniel H(A?) Dunham: Eliz Adkins, Wm Jones, Benj Temple & Thos B Temple (see Dunham post for Temple), buyers at sale of property of Thos s Adkins: Petition for division of property:
"The petition of Joel Walker Winston in behalf of himself and William Adkins minor orphan of Thomas S Adkins for whom he is gaurdian comlaing humbly therewith to the Court that the said Thomas S Adkins departed this life in the yaer 1815 intestate having two children Thomas a child who is since dead and the said William Adkins and Elizabeth E Adkins since intermarried with your petitioner. At the time of the death of the said Thomas S Adkins your petitioner states he was seized of a tract of land lying in said County containing about one hundred and sixty acres, and also eleven negroes [gives names/values], your petitioner states to the Court that the aforesaid property has never been divided between your petitioner, who claims by virtue of his wife, who is the widow of the said Thomas S Adkins and the surviving child of the said Thomas S. Your petitioer relinquishes the right of dower to the said lands and prays only that the personal property may be divided between him and the said William Adkins the surviving child and that ..."
Note: There was no date on petition itself, but petition was granted & division odered by the Court in Jan 1821. The share of William Adkins & William Adkins, himself, remained in the care of the said JOEL WALKER Winston, his step-father and guardian. It is probably not just a coincidence that this William Adkins was born abt 1814 in Williamson Co, TN, and the JOEL WALKER Adkins, Sr of the 1850 FC of Grimes Co, TX was listed as born 1814 TN. JOEL WALKER Winston reportedly lived in Franklin Co, AL (listed there in 1830), and to have died abt 1840 in Sumpter Co, AL. JOEL WALKER Adkins, Jr was listed as b abt 1834 AL.
Request: If anyone has any indication or proof that the William Adkins, surviving son of Thos S Adkins & Elizabeth Ensley Jones, was, or was not, the same as the JOEL WALKER Adkins listed in 1850 FC of Grimes Co, TX, please share that with us. I think there is a very good possibility they were the same person.

Note: There are numerous references to this Joel Walker Adkins, Jr, his wife's Davis family & their descs, in Family Search. I had copied some of the info from 1900 FC of Bee Co, TX because I had ordered the TX soundex for other Adkins & copied John Atkins & Susan Renfro family of Bee Co. I had likewise ordered the 1880 TX soundex for Adkins/Atkins, and had copied many of those born in AL, which I later discovered also included some from Hill Co, TX. When I was ordering CSA pension files from TX State Library of Amanda "Jane" (Adkins) Childrey "Childry" of Hill Co, I also ordered Adkins/Atkins files from Bee Co, TX becaue they were so inexpensive, and promtly sent. I have not found/copied any info from 1910-1930 of this Adkins family, yet.
Note: I did not gather all this info about Joel Walker Adkins, Jr together until I was finally able to find some descs of Lewvania Adkins & Daniel A Dunham outside of Tipton Co, TN, where he left a rather lengthy will. I found one of their sons, J(oseph) H, in the 1880 FC that has recently been added to Family Search. Some of his sister's family, Fisher which I recognized from the will, were also listed in his household in the 1880 FC of Grimes Co, TX. When I found these Dunham descs in Grimes Co, TX, I immediately remembered that I had copied info from that census on other Adkins, and began investigating the connection, and collecting more information on both families. I will post more about the Dunham family in a later post.
TX CSA pension file A-43168 for Mary Elizabeth Adkins, widow of Joel Walker Adkins (Jr): Filed in 1927, she stated she was b 1/29/1842 in MS, that she had been a resident of TX since abt 1845, she had md veteran in Grimes Co, TX on 10/20/1859 and that she had been a resident of Bee Co, TX since about 1889, but that her husb died in Refugio Co, TX on 4/2/1910. He had served in and rec'd a pension for federal service in Texas Rangers before Civil War, but had enlisted in CSA army, Co B Madison's Regt TX Cal in Grimes Co, TX on 5/5/1862 & served to March of 1864, when he was discharged due to "chronic rheumatism". The fact that she was already receiving a pension for his federal service in Texas Rangers did not disqualify her from also being awarded a widow's pension for his confederate service. She d 10/16/1928 in Bee Co, TX, Beeville PO, at home of son-in-law, J E McCollum. Her son, Lock M Adkins signed her Mortuary Warrant.
Final note: I'm posting this info before taking more time to look thru my files, and may find more. I just wanted to see if anyone is searching for, or has any connecttions to, these Adkins families of Wmson Co, TN & Grimes Co, TX. Thos S Adkins's widow moved back to Madison Co, AL, where she md Joel Walker Winston, & the Dunham family moved to Tipton Co, TN, before descs moved to Grimes Co, TX. I have not spent much time looking for Jones family, but have tons of info on Garrett family, as they are also related to Young-Adkins-Ray families of Wmson & Maury Co.s, TN. I look forward to hearing from you fellow researchers of these same families in these same areas.
Happy holidays & more later,
