Probate Records

To search probate records for St. Clair, would someone have eto actually visit the courthouse in Alabama? Are any listings available online to see if a record exists for an ancestor?

I am trying to either find a will or probate record for James Cowan/Cowen who died in St, Clair county some time between 1880-1900. Does anyone have suggestions for someone who lives far away? If there are book listings of probate record entries for that time period, I could possibly find the book through our state History Commission. Thanks!
