Evans Cemetery is located on Hwy 80 (Crawford Rd) at the corner of Barrow Road. It's a rapidly developing area of Russell County, and several people with ancestors in this over 125 year-old cemetery are banding together to help protect it from developers. To do this; much research has been going on to learn it's entire history.
Recently, we learned a church was once on the site of Evans Cemetery. As late as 1933, the Hopewell Baptist Church was located on the site and the cemetery was sometimes called "Hopeful Cemetery".
If anyone has information on this church or cemetery that could aid us in our research, I'd greatly appreciate you contacting me at <firstname.lastname@example.org>.
With the assistance of an Auburn University student, we've traced the land where the cemetery is located back throught it's ownership to 1832, when a Creek Indian Chief was "provided" the land during the land treaty of 1832.
The land eventually began owned by the Evans family in early 1860s...
The cemetery has historical significance; there are a few confirmed veterans buried there from the Civil War, WWI and WWII. We REALLy want to preserve this old cemetery. Any help will be greatly appreciated....
