I am looking for information on my Joseph B. Johnson born 1828 in GA who married Samanthe E (Elinor?) BRYAN. [We also believe Joseph B.’s middle name may have been BRYAN). The marriage probably took place in Russell County, AL in 1850. The family moved to Mansfield, DeSoto Parish, LA ca. 1858/9 and remained there at least until Joseph’s death in 1883.
I am interested in seeing if there is a connection to the ALLEN BRYAN family. Family correspondence includes a line indicating that Joseph had been to visit ALLEN BRYAN, but family relationship is not mentioned.
Here is info on this family:
JOSEPH B. JOHNSON was born August 19, 1828 in Marion County Georgia, and died 1883 in DeSoto Parish, LA. His parents were David Johnson and Catha Ann Sanders. He fought in the Civil War in the 11th Battalion of the Louisiana Infantry, Co. D.
JOSEPH B. JOHNSON married SAMANTHA E. (ELINOR?) BRYAN, probably December 4, 1850 in Russell Co. AL. Samantha was born about 1833, according to census records. In family correspondence, she was referred to as “Mattie”, “Mat”, or possibly “Manny”. Her middle initial was E. Joseph’s sister, who was close to him and gave her children family names, named a daughter Samantha Elinor, so we believe that was Joseph’s wife’s name.
Joe B. and Samantha moved to DeSoto Parish Lousiana around 1858 or 1859 and remained there at least until Joseph’s death in 1883, where his succession records are filed. It is not known if Samantha stayed in DeSoto after his death.
According to census records, they had the following children:
Harvey Harrison Johnson born ca. 1855 in AL
Allice S. Johnson born ca. 1859 in AL
Mary/Marie Johnson born ca. 1862 in LA
David Johnson born ca. 1869 in LA
Bryant Johnson born ca. 1870 in LA [appears in 1880 census at 11 years old, but didn’t appear in 1870]
Dick Johnson born ca. 1871 in LA
Joe Johnson born ca. 1875 in LA
Margrett Johnson born ca. 1856 in AL [Appears on 1870 census at 14 years old, but did not appear on 1860 census]
Any help would be appreciated.
