There's a book, Disloyalty_in_the_Confederacy by Georgia Lee Tatum, profiled on Google Books:

On page 67, it reveals that as much as 2/3 of the Randolph County population may have been members of the Alabama Peace Society.Among the mentioned is justice-of-the-peace Wallace Washington Dobson (my uncle), who was a Mason, a Whig-Republican, and a member of Sheriff Larkin Breed's Mounted Infantry Regiment:

With every study, it appears the local homeguard was used to protect anti-war or pro-Union citizens from secesh and conscription.
