Cynthia, I found a posting that referred to some Civil War letters that were exchanged between William A. Ferguson and his wife Mary Chalmers. So far I have not been able to track these down, but I sure would like to read them. After the Civil War, James Chalmers and three of his children, including Mary and her family, moved to Salem Va.

Do you happen to know anything more about James Chalmers? He was born in Scotland around 1820. I don't know who his parents were of why he came to live in Pickens Co Al. I do know there were some marriages in Va in the 1700's between the Chalmers family and the Lanier family that I suspect is related to my Miller brothers. I have wondered if James was associated with that family.
