J.E. Richardson joined the 26th (O'Neal's) Ala. Inf., Company I "Sipsey Guards" formed in Fayette Co., which was formerly Co. A of the 3rd Battalion Ala. Inf., as a Private. There was a sharpshooter unit attached to this regiment. The sharpshooters were detached from all ten companies. He was captured at Fort Donelson on 2/16/1862 and sent to Camp Douglas, Ill. on the Steamship Warner. He was then sent to Vicksburg, Miss. for exchange on 9/6/1862.J.E. rejoined the regiment after a furlough in early November, 1862.Present at Andersonville. Paroled 5/21/1865 in Columbus, Miss.
Most of this information comes from the webpage of the 26th Ala. Inf. Regiment. I believe that they are planning a reunion soon. You should look into that.
