I am not completely sure if his name was James or John. We have both in our family. My grandfather's father was John for sure. so I'm thinking my great great grandfather was the James. My grandfather's typed letter describes his grandfather as "J.E. Richardson, a soldier of the Confederacy". I also found some of the documents in the National Archives. I would like to find out what the 26th did during the Civil War. My grandfather said his grandfather went all the way to the end and stuck his rifle in the dirt barrel down and walked away from it when the war was over and started walking home.
