town of Fairfield (now Cochran) - 1840

Does anyone know anything about the history of the town Cochran (formerly Fairfield), in Pickens County, AL? Our family's ancestor John G Clarke (b 1813, GA) was living there around 1840 when he got married to a woman just on the other side of the stateline, in Noxubee County, MS.

In the 1850 US Census his trade is listed as "Commercial Merchant". He was originally from Georgia, so I am trying to form some idea of what sort of business may have brought him to the Pickens/Noxubee area, and since he and the family were gone by 1860, I am hoping to yield some clue about where they may have next moved on to after they left the area.
