Here's what I have on John Smelley, but it doesn't look like there is much that you don't already know:
SMELLEY, John
Died in Pickens Co. around 1897. His wife Sarah Elizabeth filed for pension. He was in 36th Ala. Inf. Reg., Company H. [Co. H was raised in Greene County and led by James W.A. Wright.] 1880 Census lists 2 children still in household: N.T. (Tabitha) 23 years and S.M. (Steve) 17 years.
