Dr. J. W. N. Mears was born in Vermont in 1827. In 1850, he is found in the Barbour County, AL Census. In the 1860 Census, he is a resident of Greene, AL, shown as "Josep W. N. Mears." He is shown as a Confederate "Contract Surgeon" in the Civil War. In May,1864, he is a resident of Butler "on the Kentucky Central Railroad," in Pendleton County, Kentucky, where his right to vote was challenged as " being connected with the Southern Confederacy…" Other (questionable) records show that he was also a Surgeon for the Union Army at one point. In the 1880 Census, he is shown in Washington Co., MS residing in the Refuge Precinct. In 1885, Dr. Mears was issued “Pro forma Certificate to practice in the State of AL,” Pg 301, Transactions of the Medical Association State of Alabama. On May 20, 1889, he married M.F. Wilson in Perry, AL. His Will was probated in Perry County, AL in 1898. Does anyone else have any addition information on Dr. J.W.N. Mears (1827-1898)?
