Two indian questions

The town of Catako is located in Morgan County, Alabama in a valley called Catako Valley. Also, Morgan County was originally named Catako County. I have heard all my life (50+ years) that Catako was the name of the indians who lived there. I know there was no tribe called Catako so it may have been what the local settlers called the indians at that time. Or it could possibly be what the indians called the valley and therefore the settlers referred to the indians as the Catako indians. I would like to find out if they were Creek or Cherokee. When I look at indian territory maps it is very close to where they meet so it could be either one.

Another indian story I have heard over and over is about some indians who arrived at Feemster Springs in Marshall County in the late 1940's and camped in the woods at the Springs for a couple of weeks. Feemster Springs is on the Feemster Gap road near Red Hill, Alabama. After the indians left curious people explored the area and discovered that the indians had uncovered a cave in the side of the mountain. Most of the families living around there were descendants of the original settlers and no one had any idea there was a cave there. The indians had to dig way down (I don't really know how far, 10 feet or more) to uncover the opening to the cave and they only dug one hole so they apparently knew exactly where to dig. Some people went down into the cave and found indian drawings on the walls but no one knows if they were put there in colonial times or by the indians who opened up the cave. Speculation was that there may have been something buried there that the indians came to retrieve based possibly on family legends passed down thru the years. I have been told it was in the papers at the time it happened but I have never been able to find anything about it in print.

If anyone has information on the origins of the name "Catako" or the story about the cave at Feemster Springs I would love to hear from you.
