The Life and Times of Granville Dennis
Granville Dennis met his future wife, Mildreth Ann Lewis, in Morgan County, Alabama in the early 1840's. He was from Tennessee, but born in Virginia. She and her forbears were pioneers to Tennessee and now were explorers in the relatively young state of Alabama. They married, raised kids, and eventually moved away from Flint, Morgan County, Alabama, when the Civil War became too close for comfort. Their fears were realized shortly after their move because the now of Decatur, a short distance from Flint, was burned to the ground by advancing Union troops. This poor family escaped in a covered wagon and ambled through Alabama, Mississippi, and Louisiana, until they stopped in Claiborne Parish Louisiana. They left behind kith and kin, parents, grandparents, and cousins to explore new lands and see new horizons.
