Hi, I was surprised to do a search on Snell's in Monroe Co., AL to find that there have not been any posts. I am at a dead end with my ancestor William Snell b. btw 1789 - 1804 in SC (prob. Orangeburgh Co., SC where many Snell families seem to be). There is a John Snell b. 1794 in SC & his wife, Elizabeth Nettles, who are buried at the same cemetery in Monroe Co., AL as William Snell's grandchildren. I have often wondered if there was a family connection between William & John. They are born about 5 or less years apart and both born in SC. Other than John & his wife being buried at the same cemetery as some of William Snell's descendants, I have not found any other connection. To date, the only William Snell I have found who fits the year of birth and place of birth, would be the son of John Frederick Snell b. 23 Sep 1759 in SC. His wife's name is Elizabeth Utsey or Ott. John F is the son of Henry Snell and Julianna of Germany. I am still investigating the possibility of parentage, but would like to find further proof either way. John Frederick Snell has a daughter named Rebecka, and my William Snell named one of his daughter's Rebecca. I realize that's a fairly common name, but this is the only other time I have seen the name Rebecca associated with the Snell's prior to the 1800's. Of course this is not proof, but an item of interest. Another Snell researcher had my William Snell as the son of an Elias Snell (very common name with the Snells), but that line proved to be incorrect. My William Snell married Annie Elizabeth Davis about 1818 and had at least 8 children. The year of death is unknown for William Snell, but his widow Elizabeth Snell married Jocob Rikard on 05 Dec 1838 in Monroe Co., AL. Elizabeth brought her eight children to the marriage, but I have only found six of the eight (Mary 'Rebecca' Snell b. 1819, Joseph T Snell b. 1821, Elizabeth "Betsey" Snell b. 1823, John William Snell b. 1824, James Monroe Snell b. 1830 & Sarah Snell b. 1832. I don't have much on John Snell b. 1794 SC or Elizabeth Nettles except they are both buried at the Buena Vista Cemetery, in Monroe, Al. I have found 6 children for them, but do not have info. on their descendants (John, Sarah, Theodore, Laura, Susan, & Elbert). If anyone has information to share on these Snells in Monroe Co., AL, please contact me. I'm fairly certain William Snell descends through Goss Henry Snell (Schnell) of Germany. I'm wondering if it's possible if William Snell could have been in the War of 1812. I did find a William Snell of SC listed, but no other info. If John F. Snell's son William (b.1792) was in the War of 1812, he would have been about 20 years old. Does anyone know how I could find further records of this one William Snell of SC that was in the War of 1812? I also saw a John Snell of SC on the list too. It has been suggested that William Snell went by John William Snell. He has a son named John William, so there is the assumption that he might have been a Sr. I think there has been confusion between William and John Snell of Monroe Co., AL, especially since John is buried where one would expect William to be buried. I know John and William Snell of Monroe Co., AL are not the same person, because William's widow remarried in 1838. John Snell died in 1870. That's the extent of my Snell family of Monroe Co., AL. Some of William's descendants moved to Texas, but most stayed in AL. Thanks for any info. Lisa Notify Administrator about this message?
