Patricia,
It looks like you were researching the Cassidys a decade ago and may no longer be active on message boards, but you could have gotten, and can still get, a lot of information on the Cassidys and allied families (including O'Halloran, McCormack and Fields) from The Butler County Historical Society, P. O. Box 561, Greenville, AL 36037.
John C. Cassidy -- father of the Rev. Thomas McCormack Cassidy who did become a Catholic priest and was a noted cleric in Mobile, AL -- was a peddler by trade, one of theoriginal door-to-door salesmen. He was a native Irish Catholic and worked to have a Catholic church established in Greenville. By the time the builders broke ground for St. Elizabeth's Catholic Church in 1904, John Cassidy was described in a newspaper article as a man who had done more "than any other member in getting up the funds of the church."
Thomas M. Cassidy attended St. Bernard College as well as colleges in Ireland and Italy, was ordained in 1915. At the time of his death, he was pastor of St. Francis Xavier Catholic Church in Toulminville, a suburb of Mobile. Both John's M. Cassidy's obituary in 1932, and his son Rev. Thomas M. Cassidy's obituary in 1938, show the high regard that the community had for these men.
Our Butler County Historical Society Quarterly featured an article about the Cassidys and Greenville's Catholic Church in the July 2012 issue.
Regards,
Annie C.
