The Mobile County Health Department maintains the death certificates for Mobile dating from the 1880s so there may be one available for John Venus. If you have not already done so, the State health department in Montgomery would likely have one as well.

This should give the cemetery where he was buried. It is my understanding that an index of the county death certificates was published by the Mobile Genealogical Society. Check their website ( under "Publications".

Magnolia cemetery has their records available at the office at the cemetery. They will usually send you copies of the plot records. You might give them a call at (251) 208-7307 and inquire. There is also the Friends of Magnolia cemtery which may also be able to help. Their number is (251) 432-8672.

Another avenue may be the Catholic cemetery which, if I'm not mistaken, is around the same age as Magnolia. I did receive records from them in the past so here is the address: 1700 Martin Luther King Ave., Mobile 36617.

Maybe this will help some,

Good luck,
