Mobile's Heritage Once Again Threatened
Mobile, the most historic city in Alabama, is run by a government completely inept at preserving its important structures.
So now the Masonic Building, which the Mobile Historic Preservation Society has been trying to sell for $1, has been struck.
Whoever the Mobile city arsonists are, they have been working hand in hand with some of the top city leaders to destroy so many remnants of our heritage that many people truly believe the arsonist is either a city employee or is hired by the city.
When the arsonists struck the YMCA building across the street from Government Plaza, some of the city's top leaders said they wanted it torn down."I don't want to be looking at it next year," one of the city morons was quoted as saying.
The solution to that problem, in my opinion, would be remove him from office. That way he wouldn't have to look at it.
The turn-of-the-century house next to the recycling center would have made a great restaurant or business with all that parking next to it.Instead, someone must have decided it need to be a skyscraper or the new social security building. So much for historic houses!
When other developers got permission to bulldoze Atchison's Antiques for their proposed building (which looks like it will never happen after all), they quietly demolished the loveliest little ANTEBELLUM cottage nextdoor to it which many people never even noticed beneath the later construction muddling. It could have been moved very easily. But the large turn-of-the century yellow house next door to it was so big that its destruction would have been too noticeable and apparnetly someone felt that was a job for the arsonists.
When drugstore chains wanted to locate where existing residences were, many neighbors on Dauphin and Government Streets reported seeing the young white male arsonists in their green Chrysler Lebaron convertible but police made no progress in breaking the case.
There were other fires on Dauphin, Conti, Broad St., all properties which commercial interests were or are looking at.One little old lady was burned out of home by three attacks.Where has the press and media been?
It seems odd that the police have made no progress in catching these criminals who are destroying Mobile's historic buildings, yet in Prichard they can track down two little boys and charge them with burning abandoned shotgun houses.
