Lucy,
In re-reading this old posting you mentioned that James Crawford was a first cousin to John Lewis who married Eve Hutchinson.
It crossed my mind that that might be the origin of the name for the brother of my Benjamin Lewis. Both Benjamin and Crawford Lewis (brothers) both married in Henry Co. AL - Benjamin married there in 1835, Crawford married about a year earlier. They both used many of the same names among each set of their children.Several of the children and grand children, etc.in both lines had "Henry" as part of their name.Intangible, of course.
I wondered if you had seen any other information over the years that link the Lewis/Crawford/Hutchison group with any of the Lewis people in early (pre-civil war) SE AL?
There were so many Benjamin Lewis men in SC in the late 1700s/early 1800s that I have not found a way to tell which group was the one from whom my Benjamin Lewis b. Jan 1811 (Lexington, SC per his CSA enlistment papers).I am trying to see if there are any logical links from my Benjamin to a particular SC Lewis that might give me an idea where to focus my research.
Have you by chance seen anything in what you've researched that you think might likely be worth me looking into further?
