Still trying to track down my elusive Smith ancestry. Tassie Smith Lewis was my grandmother's half-sister. Tassie was the daughter of Monroe Smith and his first wife, B. Howard Smith. My lineage is through the 2nd wife, Mary Jane Todd. Mary Jane & Monroe divorced in 1913 and he remarried Okalonie Lewis. Tassie married Okalonie's brother, Joe Lewis. I'm pasting information from my previous posting on this board about this Smith line. Looking to make connections with any on this Smith side an especially trying to find out where Monroe Smith is buried. Okalonie is supposed to be buried in the Roselawn Cemetery in Limestone County, AL...but according to the records of the cemetery, there is no record of a Monroe or Okalonie Smith being buried there.

SMITH, TODD - Still looking for information about my great-grandfather, Monroe Smith of Limestone County, Alabama. He was born abt. 1869 and was married at three least times. First wife was B. Howard and know he had at least two children from this marriage: Samuel Smith and Tassie Smith. 2nd wife was Mary Jane Todd (my g. grandmother). They had four children: Gussie Smith, Lula Mae Smith (b. 1899), Goldie Lee Smith(b. 1900), and Viola Smith(b. 1907). Shortly before Viola was born, Mary Jane left Monroe and took their three children and caught a ferry or boat. The last child, Viola, was apparently born after Mary Jane left Monroe.

Mary Jane's father (John Todd) met them at some point. Mary Jane ended up settling around Boaz, Alabama and remarried to a George Hooper. Lula Mae and Viola ended up marrying their step-brothers. My family doesn't know much about Monroe. I did find him listed in the 1920 Soundex for Limestone County. Do know that his daughter Tassie did locate Viola (sometime in the late 1920's or early 1930's) and was arranging for Viola to go and meet him, but he died before this could happen.

I am assuming he was still in Limestone County. Goldie Lee Smith (my grandmother) married Dewey Samson Brown of Walker County, Georgia on January 31, 1926 in Alabama and lived the rest of her life there before passing away on July 28, 1996.

Would appreciate connecting with any of my distant cousins on this line and sharing any information about Monroe or best place to locate more info. about him or his descendents.

I know that Monroe divorced Mary Jane several years after she had left him in 1913 and remarried the same year to Okalonie Lewis. She had a few children already. Believe Monroe and Okalonie had one child together. Monroe's daughter Tassie married Joe Lewis, Okalonie's brother.

Thanks,
Tony Pope
