Thank you Thomas. This is my family.
My grandfather is William L Pruitt (they misspelled in the 1920 census, but it is correct in the next census), he was born August 22, 1914 in Lanett, AL. His brother, Leslie would be 6 years older than him (according to the 1920 census), so going on that he should have been born around 1908, if William had not had a birthday yet then it could have even been 1909, either year would be before the 1910 census.
Unfortunately the boys' mother died of consumption when they were very young and their father (from my understanding of what I was told yesterday) was very old and could not care for them alone. I am beginning to doubt the truth in that because I searched for a 63-73 year old Pruitt that was married with one child aged around one year old named Leslie in both Georgia and Alabama and did not find any. Either way, both boys were sent to Bosque County, Texas to live with the Johnsons. The Johnsons are not blood relatives. I was hoping to find out what their parents names (my great grandparents) are from this census. No one knows because my grandfather (William) was only 5 or younger when he went to live with the Johnsons and no one recalls him saying who his parents were. As for Leslie, he left sometime around his 18th birthday and was not heard from again (that's what I was told yesterday by William's daughter in TX who calls the Johnsons Grandma and Grandpa Johnson).
The same aforementioned Texas daughter also said that she thinks William's mother (and therefore Leslie's) name was M. M. Fincher (or some version thereof: Fancher, Fencher), but she has no idea what the M's stand for. The 1920 census says she was born in Georgia, the 1930 says Alabama.
I was told that the Johnsons came to the Pruitt household, met the boys, wanted William, was told they had to take both if they took one and therefore they did. If this was a legal adoption proceeding how could I find that record? The fact that their names were not changed to Johnson makes me think that it somehow was not. Is this a misconception?
