As a follow-up to Thomas Kerwin's response, the state of Texas didn't keep statewide death certificates until 1903. I see from an earlier post that Joseph died in 1887 so I don't think one would be available for him.
But, for his wife Susan, I see these two listed in the index:
Susan Perry Strickland, died 10 Feb 1928 Howard County, TX
Susan C. Strickland, died 20 Jan 1933 Harris County, TX
I believe copies are available through the Texas health department and possibly the Texas state archives.
If you know which regiment Joseph Strickland served under, that may help narrow down which Georgia county he was from. I see you already have Susan Strickland's CSA widow's pension application so it should have his regiment name given.
If you can pass on that regiment, I may be able to find something in Joseph's service records.
