About the least expensive way to look up the US census records is at a large public library .. These records are available from 1790 thru 1930 ( except 1890 which burned up in a 1923 fire in Washington ) And the early census records for Georgia 1790, 1800 and 1810, were burned by the British during the War of 1812 .. The 1940 census records will be released to the public in 2010 , ( 70 year rule ) .. Also, the LDS Centers which are nationwide .. Look on their website, www.familysearch.org to find one near you .. The 1880 census is available at no-charge on this website, too. The LDS have the largest collection of genealogical records in this country .. You can find the US Social Security death index for free on several websites , just type in SS Death Index. Keep in mind that Social Security records didn't begin until 1937 or 1938 .. Birth and death records are available from some of the various state archives, but by and large most states didn't begin this until after 1900 .. And for convenience, you can always subscribe to one of the genealogical services like Ancestry.com , if you don't mind spending $100 or so, per year ..
