In 1817 the Mississippi Territory was spilt roughly in half. The western part became the state of Mississippi and the eastern part became the Territory of Alabama. Alabama became a state in 1819. It is my understanding that the US Congress considered about 50,000 square miles the approximate best size for new states. The Mississippi Territory was about 100,000 square miles. Of course they soon changed their minds about the size of states.
