My name is Emiliano Gorgas, historian for the Gorgas family in the United States and Puerto Rico.
Other variants of the name Gorgas are: Gorges, Gorgias, Giordano. The Gorgas name is originally from Sicity, Italy. Members of the Gorgas (Gorgias) family migrated during the Roman Empire to other countries such as Spain, Holland, Germany, Norway, France, Sweeden, The Netherlands and many others. The name was changed according to the pronunciation in various countries, to the variants existing today.
I have been doing research about the Gorgas family name for the past ten years.
In addition to BG Josiah Gorgas, CSA, who served under General Robert E Lee during the U. S. Civil War, and his son, Doctor William C. Gorgas, U. S. Army Surgeon General of the Panama Canal fame, there are many other members of our family who distinguished themselves - and actually contributed to history thoughout the past 2500 years.
Brigadier General Josiah Gorgas was a former President of the University of Alabama after the U. S. Civil War.
. A cousin of Doctor William C Gorgas, U. S. Navy Captain Miles C Gorgas, explored the Artic, served in China, and fought during the Spanish American War in the Phillippines in 1898.
Another cousing of BG Josiah Gorgas, was Captain Samuel Gorgas, 1820-1886 , Captain in the Spanish Royal Navy, provided arms, weapons and ammunition to BG Josiah Gorgas, to help the Confederacy during the U. S. Civil War.
Sir Ferdinando Gorges, was the owner of the state of Maine - later it was sold to the State of Massachussetts by his grand-son.
In my research I have traced the Gorgas family name to about 485 BC. I have an enormous amount of documents, data and information that I would like to share with members of the Gorgas, Gorges, Gorgias family.
