Charlotte,Sand Mountain isn't very high (about 1,000 ft), but it does cover a lot of area.It is a large plateau.OK, get your map out and follow this outline.
The northern boundry is in Tennessee. From the Tennessee River, go east to Interstate 59. This is the smallest boundry of the Mountain.
The eastern boundry follows Interstate 59 south from roughly Interstate 24, clipping a corner of Georgia and all the way down I 59 to almost Birmingham.Interstate 59 runs down through the Big Wills Valley (Big Wills Creek) and down the eastern edge of Sand Mountain.
One other posting is somewhat confusing. For info, Gadsden is NOT on Sand Mountain, it is in the Big Wills/Coosa River Valley.
The southern end is a little harder to define for you but roughly goes like this.At the intersection of I 59 and State Road 79, go north toward Pinson.Stay on AL 79/US Hwy 231 through Locust Fork & Cleveland.Just south of Blountsville, Hwy 79 shoots off and goes to Guntersville.
Hwy 79 basically starts to make up the south western boundry here and Sand Mountain is better defined up through another valley here.In Guntersville, you pick up the Tennessee River heading north back toward Tennessee and our starting point of Interstate 24 & the river in Tennessee. Thus, the Tennessee River makes up the north western boundry of Sand Mountain.
Hope this helps and doesn't add to your frustration.I am a native of Albertville, the "heart of Sand Mountain" and have folks buried in Marshall, Dekalb & Jackson counties for sure.
Happy Hunting, Rick
