Craig, Treadwell, Stanford, Price Families
Surnames: Craig, Treadwell, Stanford, Ferrell, Norwood, Pemberton, Robinson, Mask, Coleston, Turner, Skinner, Shields,Dawsey, Barefield
My ancestor, John STANFORD, married second a Mattie A. or Amelia A.
Treadwell. Her parents, as per internet posting below, were John
TREADWELL and Laura CRAIG. I am desperate to find out who Hamit (or
Hammitt or Hammit or Hamitt or Hamet or Hammett or Hammet or Hamett or
Mit - you get the picture) and Laura Craig are and how they relate to
John and Laura Treadwell. I have included every lead I have to find
out more about the CRAIG and TREADWELL families. Sorry this is so
long! Thanks for your input. Fredreica
John R. STANFORD, was born about 1821 in Ala. or Ark. John R. Stanford
is sometimes listed as "physician" and at other times as "Reverend."
His middle initial is sometimes transcribed as "B." His father may
have been John W. STANFORD
John R. STANFORD was a physician in the township of Shiloh in Marengo
County as per the Marengo County Directory for 1860-1861. His first
wife was Catharine Henrietta PRICE (sometime seen as Henrietta
Catherine PRICE). She died 14 Oct 1856 at Magnolia, Alabama in Marengo
County. They were married 28 March 1849 in Drew Co., Arkansas.
Dr. John STANFORD and his wife, Catharine PRICE, had at least one
child, a daughter, Mary Wallace STANFORD. She was born 3 April 1850
(possibly in Ark.) and died 21 April 1922.
John STANFORD served in Company B with the 6th Alabama Cavalry.
After his first wife's death, he married a woman named Amelia A.
According to the 1860 Marengo Co., Ala Census (see below), she was 26
years of age and born in NC. She had two sons from a previous marriage
named Juan and Oscar. Amelia tried to kill Wallace (John STANFORD's
daughter) and Wallace was sent to school at Salem Academy in
Winston-Salem, NC. I have letters written by Wallace and her father
and dated in 1863.
According to letters postmarked from Manatee betwwen 1873 until 1880,
John STANFORD was living with Hammitt G. or J. (possibly John or
James) CRAIG. He signed his letters Uncle Hamit or Mit. John STANFORD
died in Manatee, Florida in the late 1870's while living with Hamit
(Hammett or Harmuet) J. Craig and his wife, Laura. Juan also died
while living with them in 1877. Hammit refers to himself as Wallace
STANFORD's uncle. As per the 1860 Marengo Co., Ala Census (see below)
this CRAIG family lived near the STANFORD family. Other family
members were Ella and Hamit, also known as Mit.

CRAIG, Marjory Mar 3, 1871 May 11, 1890 Double marker, Sacred to the
memory of Mother and Babe, the beloved Wife of Hamet CRAIG, Aged 19
years 2 mos, 8 days. Too good for this world, dear loved one, and the
Father called thee home.
CRAIG, Marjory Tirza May 7, 1890 May 14, 1890 Infant, Dau of Hamet &
Marjory CRAIG Aged 7 days And Jesus said, "Suffer little children to
come unto Me, for of such is the Kingdom of Heaven." We do not call
thee lost, our loved ones, but only gone before. Peaceful be thy
silent slumbers, Peaceful in thy graves so low, Thou no more shall
join our number, Thou no more our song shall know. Yet again we hope
to meet thee, when the day of life is fled, and in heaven with joy to
greet thee where no farewell tears are shed.
Laura Frances Pemberton Robinson
Submitted by her GGgranddaughter Anne Orsi Smith
...."William Stith Pemberton, second child of Thomas Pemberton and
Frances Lilly. He was born December 23, 1823. He married Laura James
Craig, daughter of Doctor James Craig and Laura Norwood, October 26,
1848."
..."I visited one winter in Florida, my mother's sister Mrs. Mary
Ferrell and her brother Hamet Craig."
...."Dr. James Craig, died a few months before my mother was born.
They lived in North Carolina near neighbors to my grandmother
Pemberton. Some years after my grandfather's (James Craig) death, my
grandmother married a Dr. Treadwell and had a good many children.
After my father and mother married, my mother's mother and all her
family went to Alabama to live."
..."said he (Dr. Craig) and his father Dr. Benjamin Robinson used to
meet and have consultations."
...."Dr. Benjamin Robinson lived in Fayetteville, North Carolina, and
Dr. Craig in Stanley County, North Carolina, about a hundred miles
apart."
...."my grandfather Craig, said he drove "a coach and four." I know
that he was a wealthy man for that day and place. He left his three
children, my Aunt Mrs. Mary Tyrza Ferrell, my Uncle Hamet Craig, and
my mother each a nice little fortune."
"The Craigs came from Ireland, and were Scotch-Irish. I think my great
grandfather Craig came from Ireland, and my grandfather Craig was born
in this country...."
..."I have been told we have no Craig kin in this country, except the
descendants of a sister of my grandfather Craig. His sister was Tirza
Craig, and married a Mr. Eli Springs, of Charlotte, North Carolina."
"I think a daughter or granddaughter of Tirza Craig Springs married a
Mr. Johnson, of Charlotte, North Carolina."
..."I have been told that my grandmother Laura Norwood Craig's
mother's name was Coleston."
..."My mother died while on a visit to her mother in Marengo County,
Alabama, and was buried in the cemetery about a mile from her mother's
home. I suppose her mother and a great many of her family were buried
at that cemetery, as she lived there a great many years and died
there."
If you can help me to put these families together and, especially,
figure out where (most likely somewhere around Manatee, FL where the
Criags are buried) John Stanford might be buried, I would greatly
appreciate it.
Thanks so much!
