Nathan Byars

On the 1850 census of Lawrence Co. AL there is listed a man Nathan Byars, there is an ink blot on his age, he may have been 55 or 65, b. ca 1795 or 1785, and a woman named Elizabeth is shown in the place where the wife is usually placed. They have two young boys in the house with them. It was stated in "Exits & Entrants" by Ura McWhorter Byars that he was charged with a crime and 12 good men acquitted him. Does the records reflect what the crime was? Is there news papers extant that may carry a story about this?
Was this man the son of James Byars a Rev. War Soldier? A Nathan Byars was in Jefferson Co. KY in 1820. The birth place of Elizabeth in his house was given as KY. We find no marriage records in Alabama or Tennessee for them. Did they perhaps marry in Kentucky? Would appreciate hearing from someone that can shed some light on this family. Please, I need something that I can document.

Is the Lawrence Co. Heritage Organization able to answer questions like this?
