Times: 9-12-1890: The First Bale Darby/Walker
"On Saturday, the 6th inst, the first bale of Lauderdale's new cotton crop was sold in Florence.The cotton was raised by Mr Henry J. Darby of the Woodland beat and was classed as middling.The bail weighted 439 pounds, a gain of one pound over gin weight- and was sold at 9 1/4 cents, Mr John H Young being the purchaser.
One hour after the arrival of Mr. Darby with his bale of cotton, Rev A J Walker of Oakland beat also, rolled into twon with the second bale.This was also classed as middling and was sold for 9 1/4 cents and Mr. Young was the purchaser..."
