BONNER / VAIL 1860's

I'm looking for the whereabouts of James or Thomas Bonner (I've seen both names used) and Mary Vail Bonner. They had at least one son, Warren Joshua, born 1861. Family recollections are that the family was from Birmingham (Jefferson Cty) AL. Warren was in Marion County IL by 1880.
Any leads would be VERY helpful, especially if anyone has a census index around that time. My local FHC doesn't have one!
