dear Pamela,
I am not familiar with the New Castle area, There were coke ovens in Brookside, and I am sure many other places. The Birmingham Library Linn Henley Collection may have more about the companies operating Coke ovens. I would get a city directory from that time frame and search the Cardiff, Bessemer, Brookside and maybe even outlying areas for coke companies. Most would be located next to coal mines. Let me know how your search comes out.
