William and his family are on the census
for Jefferson Co 1850-1870. William (Bill)
married Margaret (Peggy) CONNELL, b. ca 1810 SC. Their first 2 sons, John and James M. were born in SC, and by 1834 the family is likely in Walker or Jefferson Co AL with later kids born after leaving SC in AL--
birth places being given as Flat Creek AL
Jefferson Co and Horse Creek AL in Walker Co.
This family is said to have been Cherokee Indian--some say full blood, others say part Cherokee. Theory is that when the Cherokee were being forced to leave their homes, this Hicks family chose to blend in with AL white population rather than be "Reservationized."
