This is Gardendale, A Project of the Retired Adult Club Retired Adult Club, Written and Compiled by Pauline Parker Jones, 1976

One of the earliest settlers homesteading property was William Harrison Parker who came here after the Civil War and homesteaded 160 acres. He received a land grant in 1873 signed by the President of the United States, Ulysses S. Grant. Mr. Parker built a log cabin on the property and lived in it three months out of each year to comply with the Homestead Act. He later built a large and grist mill and people cam from far and near to have their corn ground. The old mill is still in existence. Mrs. Harry Parker, Sr. now 93 years of age and Mr. Parker's daughter in law still lives on the homeplace.

There were only 2000 copies of this book printed, no one could guess where I got this one. My sister in law that lives in Kentucky happened upon it in a thrift store in the town of Hopkinsville, KY paid a quarter for it. LOL!!

*** Homestead Applications held by the National Archives can be a valuable tool. These applications (Homesteads Only) contain a two page questionaire by the person applying and two witness. The questions on Homestead Applications and witness Affidavits have questions like the persons name, age, where born, how many people live in the household, (sometimes you get lucky and it will have their names and ages) what kind of improvements have been made to the land, (houses, barn and etc)when they moved onto the property (sometimes again you get lucky and it will tell where they moved from) Some of these applications are jam packed with useful information. You can order them from the National Archives or you can go the least expensive way out and contact Peg Reeves at

http://www.reevesweb.com/r.m.cousins/

She has done great work for me. She is a lot less expensive that the general request made to the National Archives. Check out her website at the above address.

By the way, I live about 10 minutes from Gardendale, if you need anything from the area let me know, I will try and help you out.. One friend to another.
