In the book: Extract of the Rejected Applications of the Guion Miller Roll, Vol. 2, by Jo Ann Curls Page, (currently online-Google) there are 2 significant items about Uriah Hicks b 1814 who m Virena Whittle b 1821:
Item 1: the children of Uriah Hicks identify the father of Uriah Hicks Jr. b. 1814 to be Uriah Hicks Sr.. The eldest son, James Hicks, gives the maiden name of the wife of Uriah Hicks Sr. as Haney.
Item 2: Uriah Hicks Sr. may have been of Cherokee Indian blood:
Several of the children and grandchildren of Uriah Hicks b. 1814, thought his father, who they listed as Uriah Hicks Sr., was a Cherokee Indian, therefore, around 1910, they submitted claims to be added to the 1909 Guion Miller Roll of the Eastern Band of Cherokees. Of the children, - James, Mary, Ida, and Martha (Mattie) all submitted individual applications to be put on the 1909 roll.. 4 grandkids, Julie Gamble, Garth Childers, Lexie Richie, and Mary Childress also submitted individual applications. Of these 8 different applications, all were rejected and not allowed to be on the roll, because of lack of proof, i.e., could not find Uriah Hicks in the Cherokee Domain in 1835-6 & 1876 and lived with the Cherokees as recognized members of the tribe. The only evidence the children provided was that they had been told by their father, Uriah Hicks, Jr., that they were descendants of Cherokee Indians.
