Gordon, I think Anson County is going to be the answer for both our lines! The preliminary signs are looking really good! [Don't know if GenForum will accept a message this long or not, but here goes!] A little background which I may have mentioned before, but I'll repeat all the same in case I hadn't mentioned some of it before; although some of this you may have seen yourself too, but I believe by reviewing it briefly you'll better and quicker grasp my reason for optimism.. Starting with my own line, I believe that my Captain Isaac Williams had at least 3 children and probably more, but the ones of whom I'm fairly confident were: (I) HANNAH WILLIAMS (b. ca. 1808) who married "NATHAN PITTMAN, III" [Nathan and Hannah were in the 1860 Carroll Cty, MS census and in the 1880 Montgomery Co., Census, Hannah was apparently deceased, but Nathan was living with the family of Pleasant Lusk who had married a granddaughter of Isaac Williams, Hannah Williams, the daughter of Paul Williams. Paul's widow Sarah "Sallie" Williams was living in the household as well.] (II ) PETER WILLIAMS (b. between 1800 & 1810 - d. ca. 1844). Married AURIE A. WILSON in Green Cty., Ala. In 1829. [They appear to have had at least five children, perhaps more, including, it would appear: [1] SAMUEL W. Williams (b. Ca. 1834); [2] ELIZABETH JANE Williams (b. Ca. 1837) who md. Marshall Martin; [3] SARAH Williams who appears to have md. An Edward Martin; [4] REBECCA Williams (b. ca. 1839); and [5] JOHN A. Williams (b. ca. 1841). A possible sixth child was named PETER Williams. (III) PAUL WILLIAMS (May 16, 1812-Nov. 1, 1877) who married Sarah "Sallie" Wilson (Mar. 9, 1813-6 Aug. 1895) in Green Cty, Ala. In 1835. {Sarah was a sister of Aurie Wilson who married Paul's brother Peter Williams. [Sarah and Aurie were daughters of William WILSON (d. bef. 1821) and his wife, Jane GRIFFIN. William Wilson was the son of Thomas WILSON (d. 1807) and wife Elizabeth _____ (d. 1821)]. Paul and Sarah had the following children: [1] WILLIAM HUBBARD Williams (b. 1835); [2] ROBERT ANTHONY Williams (b. 1838) [My great-great-grandfather]; [3] OBADIAH WILSON Williams (b. Ca. 1840); (4) JEREMIAH RODGERS Williams (b. ca. 1841); [5] DRURY ALEXANDER Williams (b. ca. 1844); [6] JAMES LEMUEL Williams (b. 1847); [7] SARAH Williams (b.18 Oct. 1850); and [8] HANNAH ELIZABETH Williams (b. 1855) [Mentioned above who married Pleasant Lusk.]} Among the names of individuals who I have speculated as POSSIBLY being names of brothers of ISAAC WILLIAMS, but not necessarily all of them, include: Lt. NATHANIEL WILLIAMS, DAVID WILLIAMS, ROBERT WILLIAMS, WILLIAM WILLIAMS, SAMUEL WILLIAMS, GEORGE WILLIAMS, ELIJAH WILLIAMS, PETER WILLIAMS AND JOSHUA WILLIAMS. (These are all names of individuals with whom I've found to have had ties or connections of some type to ISAAC.) I want to re-emphasize that these names for the brothers of Isaac are purely speculation, but are based on the names real individuals. Also, I think it is worth noting that in Green County, Alabama, where ISAAC once lived, in the 1830 Census two men named David Williams were listed, viz., "DAVID WILLIAMS" and "DAVID WILLIAMS, JR." According to the noted Alabama genealogist, the late Mrs. Gandrud, David Williams, Sr. came to Alabama in 1819, settling in what is today Hale County. (Hale County was formed from Green, Marengo, Perry, & Tuscaloosa Counties in 1867. Among the names of the children of DAVID WILLIAMS, Jr. of Green Cty., Ala. appear to be Charles, Henry, Anthony, Hannah, Emily, Dorcas, Solomon, John J. and Silas Williams. This David appears to have married a Sarah KING. DAVID WILLIAMS, SR. I believe married a MARTHA IVEY ca. 1785. This elder David was born c. 1760 and died c. 1834. I believe he had four sons and six daughters, or ten children total, viz.: [1] Henry Williams (b. 1788) who married Nancy Henson; [2] Mary Williams who married Page Williams Harris; [3] "a daughter, name unknown, who married Abram Barbee; [4] Leavicey Williams who married William Harris; [5] Elias Williams [6] "a daughter" who married Evan R. Harris; [7] "a daughter" who married Jonathan Haddox; [8] "a daughter" who married Joseph H. Davis; [9] Charles Williams who md. Jackie M. Wiggins; and [10] a son David Williams, Jr., presumably the David Williams, Jr. discussed above. Another thing I'll mention here: In an Orphans Court record of Green County, Ala. (Book H, pg. 353) is a entry for a SARAH WILLIAMS who MAY be the widow of the above named DAVID WILLIAMS, JR. The orphan's court record mentions that ANTHONY WILLIAMS, one of her heirs, is living in ANSON COUNTY, North Carolina. That record was one of the first "strong links" I found several years ago possibly pointing to Anson County as the jumping off place for my Williams family prior to their move to Tennessee. Another Green Cty. record (Book H., p. 10) mentions Isaac's son, PAUL WILLIAMS, as being the administrator of the estate of the afore mention Sarah Williams which thus ties her to Isaac Williams. This Sarah Williams's estate record mentions many of the same names as I've found elsewhere associated with Isaac. Not necessarily the same individuals, but the same names. The list includes Hannah Williams, Charles Williams, Emily Williams, Dorcas Henry Williams, Solomon Williams, John J. Williams, and Silas Williams. As I mentioned to you a few days ago, I recently found references within deeds in Anson county to the names of both ISAAC WILLIAMS, NATHANIEL WILLIAMS, GEORGE WILLIAMS, etc. Last night on the Internet I found the following persons named in a brief abstract of an ANSON Cty. deed which supposedly records the following heirs of HUBBARD WILLIAMS [Recall from above that Isaac has a grandson named Hubbard Williams.]: HANNAH Williams, SILAS Williams, ANTHONY Williams, HUBBARD Williams, CLEMENT Williams, SOLOMON Williams, "WIDOW" SARAH WILLIAMS [Perhaps the widow named in the Green Cty. Records?], JOHN Williams, PAUL Williams, EMILY Williams, PETER Williams, Isham Henry, EMILY Williams and BENJAMIN Williams. In addition, I also found the following deed abstract posted on the Internet as well: Anson Co. NC Deed Bk M, p. 252, dated 31 Jan. 1807: Heirs of Rowland Williams, dec'd. GEORGE WILLIAMS, ROBERT WILLIAMS, DAVID WILLIAMS, HENRY WILLIAMS, JOEL WHITE, JAMES LEE, THOMAS WILLIAMS, ROWLAND WILLIAMS & AGNES WILLIAMS. I'm sure I have more data on this Rowland Williams, including where he lived prior to coming to Anson, but it isn't handy at the moment. By the way, both of these deed posting were placed by a Leslie Hood on RootsWeb/Ancestry.com message boards. I realize that no where in these documents mentioned so far has there been a reference to an EZEKIAL WILLIAMS, as in your direct ancestor, but as we've discussed before, mostly over in the Choctaw County, MS forum, my kinfolk living back in Carroll/Montgomery/Choctaw Counties of Mississippi have stated that they remember hearing their parents and/or grandparent's generation referring to your kinsmen, the late Marion Williams, as "cousin Marion." One of my mother's first cousin, who is 88 years old, recently told me that she distinctly remembers her parents referring to Marion as "Cousin Marion." Just because these couple of documents fail to mention an Ezekial Williams, doesn't mean that other documents in Anson might not mention him. Also, these documents I've quoted so far, may just be those of cousins of Isaac's family, and because of common ancestry, the family names are very similar. All these things could really be just a coincidence - they really can be; but just the same, this sure looks promising! Unfortunately, I don't have a complete copy of the indices to even the grantors or grantees for Anson County, much less one to all the names mentioned within the deeds. (Actually, all I do have in the way of copies of indexes are copies of the pages of a few select names such as CURTIS, HAMER, HICKS, BROWN, etc., of family names I already knew to be from Anson County, and even for the names I know of from Anson, I don't have a complete listings. However, I can lookup the few specific references I do have, such as the above mentioned one for Hubbard Williams. Maybe I can get lucky in scanning the deed records! <grin> I do have copies of indexes to some of the individual Will Books for Anson County, but locating them in my mess might take time. <grin> It should be interesting to see if there are extant Wills for some of these individuals in Anson County. (Unfortunately, Anson County is a "partially burnt county." While it has extensive records extant, there are many known missing records as well. For example, the few short years of extant court minutes from prior to 1848, those covering the years 1771-1777, make references to several documents, including Wills which are no longer known to be extant.) With a name as common as "Williams" one must certainly be cautious, but with the already known link between Green Cty. and Anson Cty., and the fact that so many of my direct lines and collateral lines found in Mississippi and Alabama [CURTIS, BUSBY, CARTLEDGE, CHAIRES, DUMAS, HAMER, HENDERSON, HICKS, HOOKER, JARMAN (GERMAN), KIMBROUGH, KNOTTS, INGRAM, LEWIS, RAT(C)LIFF(E), ROE, SMITH, THOMAS, THREADGILL, WALL, etc., etc., also do trace back to the Anson County region too, I think is reason to be cautiously optimistic. <grin> (Of course, inwardly, I'm "jumping up and down" with confidence <GRIN> However, I also been at this "game" long enough to know that seemingly "sure things" can get shot down real quickly too!) ---- JAY Notify Administrator about this message?
